'What other nation is so great as to have their god's near them the way the LORD out God is near us whenever we pray to him?' (Deuteronomy 3:7)
For forty years wandering in the desert God's presence with the Israelites was tangible. It was seen, felt and heard, even smelled. The pillars of cloud and fire, the Tent of Meeting, the miraculous signs - all these things testified to a God who was not distant, but to a God who was near. With his rhetorical questions, Moses reminds the people what an amazing thing it is to be chosen, to be set apart for such an intimate relationship as this.
To have a God who is near when we pray - this is an awesome, wondrous thing. The God of Moses is the same God who came as near to us as it is possible to do so when in the person of Jesus, God walked, lived, died and eventually rose from the dead amongst us. God demonstrated his limitless capacity to do whatever it takes to draw near to us. Will I, will we draw near to him?
Prayer
Lord, may I, in response to your grace that draws near to me in Jesus, draw near to you in all I say and do.
