Give ear to my words O Lord, consider my sighing. (Psalm 5:1)
If a picture can paint a thousand words then a sigh can probably paint ten thousand. For example, my daughter has an eye-roll and a sigh for every embarrassment her father imposes on her!
We sigh with frustration, anger, weariness, gratitude, awe, wonder, love, ecstasy, disappointment... Like the myriad of facial expressions we are capable of, our sighs offer a window to our soul.
God is the master sigh-interpreter. He knows every inflection; every permutation of tone, volume and expression. He knows the deep desires, longings, frustrations and emotions of our heart even before they surface in outward expressions.
When David asks God to 'consider his sighing', he is acknowledging God's intimate and personal knowledge of him and his circumstances. He is also recognising that only in God are the answers to his challenges, large and small, found. He is acknowledging the sovereignty and love of God.
Consider MY sighing Lord, I pray.
