O Lord, heal me, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in anguish. How long, O Lord, how long? (Psalm 6:2-3)
You could never accuse David of being either shy, nor retiring. He lets it all hang out when he addresses God. All his emotional, psychological and spiritual baggage is on display for all to see. This psalm, like many others that bear his name, is a mixture of pleading and defiance.
David pleads with God to rescue him from his predicaments, which are many and life-threatening. His suffering is bone-deep (v. 2a). David goes to God - his rock, fortress and shepherd. He goes to God with open hands ready to receive the mercy and deliverance he craves.
If David goes to God with open hands, to his enemies he shakes a clenched fist of defiance. God will deliver him. Circumstances will change. Vindication is just over the horizon and David's enemies should prepare for the day of reckoning.
Too easily I censor my prayers, or worse, do not offer them. Time and again the writers of scripture model a 'balls and all' honesty when addressing God. It is heart to heart communication; unvarnished, raw and messy. God can handle mess, even mine.
