Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. (Ephesians 4:19)
Once I start I cannot stop. I am seemingly powerless to resist the temptation to consume totally that which is before me. I am speaking of course of chocolate bullets. My fairly recent addiction has well and truly ensnared me. The strange combination of milk chocolate and licorice is, for me, irresistible.
We live in a culture with little impulse control; we seem powerless to stop. We can't stop consuming, even though our planet suffers the environmental consequences. We can't stop our debt binge, even though we know it enslaves us. We can't stop spending, even though we know that materialism is an empty and vacuous god that offers us nothing of worth. We have lost all sensitivity.
The things of God will never provide enough for us. When we reach out for the stuff God has made rather than God, we will always come up disappointed. In a culture of more and mine, enough will never be enough. Only with God will enough be enough. As Tim Keller has said, the sin behind every sin is that of idolatry, as we seek to satisfy our appetite for God with the things of God.
I am not immune for continual lust for more. Only in your power and strength Lord can I break this bondage. Help me.
