It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. (2 John 4)
John writes his second letter to an unnamed lady and her children. It is unclear whether the children are the woman's offspring or are people she is shepherding as a leader in the church. No matter, the reason this verse jumped off the page for me was the joy expressed by John at knowing children are walking in the truth. As a father of a two beautiful teenagers this resonates deeply with me. There is no greater desire in me than to see Joel and Emily grow in the grace of Jesus Christ.
Here is some of the joy I have experienced through my kid's faith; baptising Emily a couple of easters ago in Currumbin Creek, engaging in deep and passionate theological conversation with Em as we wrestle with big questions, seeing Joel read his bible and journal, watching Joel lead at MAD and fully engage in Youthstreet, having Mike and Jess mentor my two kids in the faith and worshipping as a family at Hillsong this year. Lots to be thankful for. I know that there are some aspects of my role as a Pastor that can put pressure on my kids; the term 'preacher's kids' is notorious. I an thankful to be in a community where by and large no unreasonable expectations are put on my kids to 'perform.'
I am committed to leading a church where children and young people can experience and then grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Unashamedly and without apology that means the outreach and ministry we offer will be biased towards families. This is the mission God has called us and me to.
