Read: Psalm 110
Key Text: The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” (Psalm 110:1)
Reflection: Psalm 110:1 is the most referred to Old Testament verse in the New Testament, quoted or inferred at least 23 times with respect to Jesus. One person has called it the ‘John 3:16’ of the early church. Such frequent use indicates the importance of the theological principle it is teaching in reference to Jesus.
In the Old Testament, the right hand was symbolic of power and authority. A king wore his ring on the right hand (Jeremiah 22:24), an elder son received the greater blessing from his father from the right hand (Genesis 48:14) and as we see in this psalm, the position of honour was at the right hand (Psalm 110:1). In the Old Testament, the right hand of God delivers (Exodus 15:6), saves (Psalm 20:6), supports in battle (Psalm 18:35) and blesses (Psalm 16:11).
The early church affirmed that David’s messianic prophecy was fulfilled by Jesus; that he is the one that Yahweh has seated at his right hand whose enemies have been made his footstool. Because Jesus is seated in the place of honour, his right hand has the power and authority to deliver his people from evil, to save them from sin and death, to support them in battle so that they live as more than conquerors and to bless them with all the riches of heaven. Praise God!
Question: What is it that you need most today; deliverance, rescue, support in battle or a blessing? Take the time to ask Jesus to give it to you with his mighty right hand.
