There are only 13 days left – 13 more days until the end of the world. At least that is the case to those who attempt to interpret ancient Mayan prophecy. According to them, on December 21, 2012 this world as we know it will come to an end. All those Christmas preparations will be for nothing!
Since time immemorial humankind has been predicting, worrying and arguing about when the earth and all it contains will pass away. It is worth reminding ourselves during this Advent season that there are a number of fundamental biblical truths – not speculation - about the future of our world.
- One day Jesus will return a second time. (Acts 1:11)
- Jesus will judge the living and the dead. (1 Peter 4:5)
- No one knows the day, nor the hour of Jesus’ return, and to speculate about dates and times is to waste our time and miss the point. (Mark 13:32)
- The lat days will be marked by trials and tribulation, especially for those who hold fast to the faith. (Revelation)
- God will make all things new – heaven and earth will be brought together in glorious harmony (Revelation 20)
- Creation – all that God has made – groans with longing expectation for that Day when its sin-scarred life will be renewed (Romans 8:20-22). So should we.
- While we wait for Jesus to come again, we should, like the 10 virgins, be alert and ready for the Bridegroom’s return. (Matthew 25)
As a Christian, I do not look forward, nor am I anxious about this world ending. Instead I eagerly await the Day when Jesus returns in glory. Every day between now and then I will live with joy-filled expectation that everything I do and say in His name is not wasted, but in fact prepares the way for His return.
